“He is Hiding in your Circumstances”- Faith in Giving – Mark 12:41-44

Dear Reader: As we enter this new year, let us consider the story of the Poor Widow, who cast in “all that she had” to the temple treasury. Jesus was watching as people made their offerings and donations to the Temple treasury. Jesus was watching? We think so much of Jesus being constantly busy and on the move doing his Father’s business. How is it that Jesus took the time to sit and watch people cast in their money? Was this so important to him? Apparently so, because the Gospel of Mark memorializes this event forever: “And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: For all they did cast in of their abundance: but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.” All of her living? Remarkable!
How many of us ever devote “all of our living” to anything or anyone? Is there a cause or a person in your life that you are willing to give “all of your living” for?
This poor widow got Jesus’ attention, and impressed him so much that he called all of his followers together to make a “teachable moment” lesson of this act of faith. Most certainly this widow had touched the heart of God. What can we learn from this glimpse into the things that touch God’s heart? May I venture to say that we might infer three things from this lesson.
1) “He is watching every thing we do.” In every circumstance, every action, every thought; He is there and it matters to Him!
2) “You can give without loving, but you can not love without giving”. This poor widow did not have much to give in the way of earthly treasure, but she was abundant in her love for God. In fact, she put her total trust in Him, to the point she was relying on Him for her total daily support. Her faith in His love for her, and His ability to sustain her grabbed the attention of the Son of God, Jesus, and he was moved by her faith!
3) “WE should assign a need to our giving, and expect a response from Heaven above.” This widow was poor and without a husband to provide for her. By casting in all that she had it was a clear demonstration of her TRUST in HIM! This powerful lesson leaves us with an unforgettable demonstration of “Faith in Action”. As Dr. Ed Cole always said; “Faith is Not Faith Until it is Faith!”.This poor widow lives forever in the “Giving Hall of Fame” because of her faith.
Let us remember;”He is Hiding in Our Circumstances”. God is here, all around us but our business and daily activities try to obscure Him from our view.If we will take the time to slow down and to look at our circumstances through eyes of faith , we will find Him. He is here with us, and He has the answers to all our needs. Jesus is the answer!
